Taboan Satellite Projects

Taboan 2012 celebrates National Arts Month all over the country through its satellite activities.  These regions will feature activities such as book fairs, storytelling sessions, poetry readings/performances, video presentations, and fora on contemporary issues in Philippine literature all within the month of February 2012.

Baguio/Cordillera
Panagbenga : Baguio Poetry Reading for Arts Month 2012
The project will consist of  2 poetry readings/performances at UP Baguio and a second venue (possibly University of the Cordilleras or Baguio City National High School) to be held on the last week of February 2012. The readings and performances will highlight the literature written in the regional language in the Cordillera, by writers who are involved in the nurturance of the literature in and of the region. Region-based writers will read their poems, written in Ibaloi, Iluko, Filipino, and English. Some of the poetry/songs will also be performed by invited local performing groups. In Baguio City, the readings will coincide with the annual festival – Panagbenga. This will be a continuation of the now-traditional readings held during the City’s flower festival.

Northern Luzon
Ilokano Oral Reading Competition
The Ilokano Oral Reading Competition proposal will be a division wide (Division of Ilocos Norte) competition. It will be in three categories, the elementary, high school, and the professionals (particularly teachers).  The competition will be sanctioned by the Office of the Schools Division Superintendent of Ilocos Norte because the program/competition will be in conformity with the teaching of Iluko Literature  inside the classrooms using the vernacular language. The oral reading in Iluko will be the first of its kind that will be conducted in the Division of Ilocos Norte.

NCR (UP)
Edith/Kerima: A Tribute-Exhibit on the Lives & Works of Two Icons of Philippine Literature
The satellite activity for Taboan 2012 will be a celebration of the lives and works of two significant writers who have recently passed on: Kerima Polotan Tuvera and Edith Tiempo.  The major components of the project are 1) a week-long exhibit of photographs, manuscripts, and other memorabilia of or in relation to the two writers, and 2) a reading/performance of fiction and poetry by and for these two icons of Philippine literature. The UP Writers Club will take charge of project implementation.

NCR (AdMU)
February 24
A jointly-sponsored activity by Taboan 2012 and Ateneo de Manila University, the project has three features, namely: 1) a forum with a panel of writers/critics speaking broadly on the various aspects of contemporary literary/critical scene in the Philippines in conjunction with a soft-launch of Kritika Kultura’s special feature on new literary and cultural criticism in the Philippines in its 10th year anniversary back-to-back with Forum Kritika’s feature on contemporary South African literature 2)   video presentation featuring academic journals and online academic publishing  in the Philippines today in conjunction with the 10th anniversary of Kritika Kultura, and 3) reading/performance of excerpts from literary/critical works of the panelists by invited performers and singing of critically acclaimed Filipino songs, classical and contemporary (from Mabuhay singers).  Kritika Kultura will be in charge of this activity.

Southern Luzon
Pintakasi kan Literaturang Bikolnon: An Ikaduwang Kabtang

The Pintakasi kan Literaturang Bikolnon 2012 is a reprise of highly-successful Southern Luzon satellite event dubbed as Tingog Cimmarron: Harampangan sa Plaza de Cimarrones staged in Pili, Camarines Sur in late February 2011.

Eastern Visayas
Katig han Sinirangan Bisayas: A Satellite Regional Activity for Taboan 2012
February 3
The 2012 Taboan Regional Satellite Activity for Eastern Visayas has two components: the writers’ conference and the literary performances. The morning session will be set aside for the writers’ conference while the afternoon session will be intended for the literary performances. Activities during the conference include presentation of Region 8 writers, getting to know each other, and disclosing one’s output work, ongoing projects and areas of interest. Issues related to Waray, Sebuwano and Inabaknon literature will likewise be tackled. Meanwhile, the literary performances will be spearheaded by the Sinirangan Culture and Arts Development Center of Leyte Normal University (LNU). Local writers from Leyte and Samar will be featured in dramatic reading and mini-theatrical performances. Writers will also read their newly written poems as part of the said literary showcase.  Katig Writers Network, Inc. will implement the project.     

Central Visayas
February 24
The Taboan 2012 Satellite Activity in Central Visayas will be held this time in Bohol (2011 was done in Cebu).  The activity is in two parts:  a forum about Boholano literature and a poetry reading and performances, scheduled at the Holy Name University, Tagbilaran, Bohol.  The forum on Boholano literature will generally tackle on the state of Boholano literature and will include an open discussion on ways and venues of making the Bohol literary scene more alive.  The poetry reading, which will follow after, will feature works of Boholano poets from the pre-war to the contemporary period, like Carlos P. Garcia, Marciano Camacho, Canuto Lim, Clovis Nazareno, Anthony Incon, and Marjorie Evasco.

Western Visayas
February 23-24
The satellite activity for Taboan 2012 for Bacolod City will be collaborative production among various artists/groups who will be tapped more as individual artists rather than as members of organizations.  The event will basically be performance poetry: dramatic readings of selected texts by Western Visayas writers in two languages (English and Hiligaynon) with simultaneous dance interpretation, theatre, music (drumbeaters) and video projection.   Thus, the event will bring together the literary, theatre, dance, music and cinematic arts in one collaborative performance.  The lead persons for the event are: Mr. Rene Hinojales for dance, Ms.  Tanya Lopez for theatre, Mr. Gerry Grey for music, Mr. Manny Montelibano for visual/cinematic arts, and Dr. Coscolluela for poetry.  In addition, there will be a poetry reading in Iloilo City to be coordinated by Dr. Isidoro Cruz.

Central & Northern Mindanao
The 2012 Taboan Satellite Activity for Central and Northern Mindanao is a performance of traditional poetry by epic chanters and the reading of contemporary poetry by contemporary poets in English, Sebuano, and Filipino.  Chanters from Marawi City and Malaybalay City will be invited to perform excerpts of the Darangen and the Talaandig epics; and, poets from Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, Malaybalay and Marawi cities will read their poems. An interaction with the audience follows.

Western Mindanao
Cosechas: A Harvest of Poems and Stories from Western Mindanao
February 18-19
The Cosechas will showcase the literary works of writers from Basilan, Tawi-Tawi, Jolo, and Zamboanga Peninsula and will provide avenue for multicultural exchange among these writers.
This satellite activity will consist of two parts: (1) readings of poetry and excerpts of fiction written in Chabacano, Tausug, Yakan, Sama, Subanon, Cebuano, Filipino, and English; (2) conversations with writers, focusing on their concerns and challenges as writers. The activity will be held on the third week of February 2012 in Zamboanga City, in time for Dia de Zamboanga celebration in the Carlos Dominguez Conference Hall, ADZU.  Participants include select writers (attended Writers’ Workshops conducted by ADZU) and established writer from the region (Butch Macansantos).
